Chapter 23 – I’m well capable of riding by myself thank you
“You tallied already?” Julia asked as she looked inside the papers and read them carefully. The first day of the school event is already ending, and a lot of people are going home already.
“Yes! It was really hard at first but I eventually managed” Natalie enthusiastically replied. Julia was amazed at how it was organized and written, she even praised Natalie for it. Even though it was I who did all the work, I really didn’t mind Natalie getting the credits for it. She has the “lead card” after all, so it’s understandable that the attention of the book is centered on her.
“How did you come up with this?” Julia asked Natalie as I was just looking at the two of them. I decided to walk away because I felt myself yawning, I was already sleepy.
“W-well, that’s…” I left them on their own and went for the gates. I was supposed to be picked up from here an hour ago but as usual, the chauffer didn’t come, I never really expected them to. So in the end, I just rode my bicycle home. I couldn’t call out Nova anymore, more like he didn’t want to come out.
I walked out of the school grounds before getting on my bike, and even before I rode it, a black car came in view. I felt a slight sense of panic but then realized…
‘What stupid mother*cker tries kidnapping in front of a guarded private school?’ I haven’t even gone past the big gates and was still in the parking lot. Before they could even get out, the guard and the CCTV would’ve seen them.
“Why are you here?” I heard a monotone deep voice which was very familiar. I felt safe and felt my body relax when I recognized who the voice was from.
‘Wait, why did I relax?’ I sighed and turned around and guess who it is!
“What do you mean why?” I raised a brow and looked into his eyes.
“I’m enrolled here, why else to do you think I’m here?” I answered him in a bothered voice and Lucas seem to notice my tired expression.
“No, I mean, why are you walking alone in the middle of the night?” Lucas realized that he came off rude and changed his tone of voice.
‘Wait, he changed his tone of voice?’ Is this Lucas? This narcissistic dude changed his tone of voice, he even spoke a full sentence.
I was out of it for a moment but then answered his question.
“Going home, unless you want me to stay and work more.” I said sarcastically; the only reason I could think of as to why he approached me is that he has work for me. He’s the school president after all and this dude won’t take his own time to approach someone unless he needed to.
“You don’t have a chauffeur?” This fact was odd to Lucas, considering I’m the daughter of Reeves, one of the richest family in the country. It would be really weird to see Michael’s daughter biking alone in the night just to get home.
“Does it look like I have one?” I sighed whilst looking at him and sat on my bicycle again to go.
“Do you know how dangerous it is?” I heard a car door open and slam shut which was followed by footsteps coming nearer.
‘I honestly think that you’re more dangerous.’ I said to myself and tried to pedal away but he caught me and held onto the bicycle.
“Excuse you?” I turned my head and raised a brow. When did this guy started caring about other people’s business?
“I’ll give you a ride.” He said in a calm voice, very different from his usual cold tone.
“I’m well capable of riding by myself thank you.” I then pulled the bike away from his grasp but he just wouldn’t budge. Look, I get his point and if I was him I wouldn’t let a girl go home alone in the middle of the night as well.
‘But I’m not just any girl.’ Wow, I sounded like a narcissist. But what I mean is I have Nova with me, so it gave me confidence in doing dangerous things which I have never done in my previous life before.
Before I could even pull the bike any further, Lucas lifted it up away from me and went on the back of his car to shove it there.
“What are you doing, give it back.” I glared at him and tried to take the bike from him but he held onto it and put it in the back of his black van.
‘How the hell do I get home now?’
I was irritated with this guy and was about to argue when walked right in front of me and stood still.
“What would Mr. Reeves and your brother think? They would’ve worried.” Lucas looked me in the eye and said. I looked at him back with eyes that said ‘are you serious?’.
“As if.” I sighed and whispered.
“They wouldn’t give two sh*ts, trust me. Now give me back my bicycle.” I said. Lucas seemed to be bewildered by my cussing and was shocked momentarily.
“Oh, please. Grow up will you?” I said and rolled my eyes. Is he a five-year-old? I just looked at the time on my phone and after much pondering, I just gave up and went inside his vehicle. I just want to get home and lay in bed honestly.
‘Let’s just go.’ I thought to myself and sat on the comfortable car seat. I looked up at the front and saw the driver sneaking a glance from the mirror. He was intrigued from the looks of it but avoided eye contact immediately.
I didn’t have to tell Lucas where to drive me to since the Reeves mansion was known in high society already. I think these rich people gather a lot, for them to know each of their residence.
The whole car ride was silent and only the sound of the vehicle was heard, not until Lucas started coughing.
*COUGH*
It wasn’t a loud and obnoxious cough, it didn’t have a phlegm sound to it and was more of a cough that came from a scratchy throat. It continued for a few more moments until I heard him sniffing silently.
‘Now that I look at it, his eyes are somehow red and watery.’ I thought to myself as I continued observing his symptoms. When I ended up with a diagnosis in my head, I spoke.
“Do you have allergies?” I asked. Lucas turned his head to me and pondered for a moment.
“As far as I can remember, I had none.” He shook his head and said.
“It seems that you may have Allergic rhinitis, hay fever in short.” I told him the diagnosis that came up in my head as an impulse. I used to do this to my friend a lot when I was still a med student that instead of going to the doctors, she’d rather ask me of her symptoms.
“But I’ve never had an allergy.” Lucas was intrigued.
“Allergies can develop late in life. You should get that checked because it looks like you have Allergic conjunctivitis.” I said as I stared into his now reddish and watery eyes.
I didn’t pay close attention earlier and just saw it now when we passed by a busy and lit up street.
“Ah, yes. I’ll get it checked.” He looked confused but at least he got the gist of what I was saying.
The rest of the ride was dead silent once again, but it was a relaxing type of silence. It made me feel sleepy but I tried my hardest to stay awake. We finally were able to reach the mansion.
I opened the van door and was about to go down to get my bicycle with the driver, I turned my head and looked back at Lucas.
“Thank you.” I smiled at him and finally climbed down the van.
I also thanked the driver who seem to be ecstatic for some reason.
“You’re always welcome Ms.! Here’s my card by the way.” I stared at the calling card that was on the old man’s hand and hesitated.
“Oh, don’t worry Ms. I have no bad intentions; you can call this number whenever you need someone to drive you.” I finally took the calling card and put it in my pockets. I walked towards the gates and looked back.
“See you again Ms.!” The old man enthusiastically said and drove off.
I stood there on the driveway for a while until the guards stationed at the gates saw me and opened the entrance. I put my bicycle under the big tree at the front and was feeling sleepier when I reached the main doors and even yawned. I didn’t have to ride a bicycle for today thankfully.
Before even stepping completely inside the mansion, I heard heavy footsteps on the marble floor which was soon followed by a heavy, stinging, and painful feel on the right side of my face.
